Does getting ready for a photo session with young children seem like a challenge? Here are some tips to make your next family photo session an enjoyable experience for everyone.

1.        What to wear

Choosing the right outfits can make a big difference. To have stunning pictures, dress your family in complementary colors. Instead of everyone wearing the same white t-shirt and black pants, consider colors that complement each other: white + beige + green or navy blue, white and pink. Bright colors appear fresh and airy.

Avoid clothes that are too colorful or have large logos and prints. While your son might love his favorite Spiderman T-shirt, for timeless photos, a solid-colored t-shirt or a simple sweater will look better.

Opt for comfortable clothing that isn't too tight, as it might not be flattering in some poses.

Changing outfits during the shoot is okay, but ensure you've taken enough photos beforehand since changing can be cumbersome, especially for little kids (and sometimes even dads).

2.        What to do

Young children won't enjoy posing and smiling for a photo. They prefer having fun. Act as if the camera isn't there and play, run, hug, laugh! Keep the kids engaged to capture your family's love and affection, capturing genuine emotions. Bring props like a bubble maker or a hand puppet to turn a frown into a smile.

3.        Where to do it

Select a beautiful location that isn't too crowded. You and your family should be the main focus. The attention should be on you, not a distracting background. If the session is at home, choose a well-lit area and don't hesitate to tidy up—watch out for extension cords, phone chargers, toys, etc.

4.        When to do it

The ideal time for photos is when the sun is near the horizon—morning or evening. However, if your children are young, avoid scheduling the photoshoot during their nap or snack time. Hungry or tired kids won't enjoy the experience.

5.        What not to do

Avoid telling your child to say cheese or forcing a smile. This leads to awkward grins. Instead, try telling a joke, making a funny face, or spinning them in the air.

You can also encourage your children with treats (ice cream, playground time, Pokémon cards…). It's worth it. Genuine, love-filled photos of your family are priceless and will be cherished in the future.
