Don’t Make These Common Mistakes Before Your Family Photo Session

🚫 Avoid Bright, Neon Colors

Steer clear of colors like neon green or hot pink — they can reflect onto your skin and give your face an unnatural color cast in photos. Soft, neutral, or earthy tones photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your expressions.

🚫 Skip the Baseball Caps

We know dads and boys love their hats — but for outdoor sessions, especially in bright sunlight, hats create harsh shadows that hide your face. Better to go without and let that light shine!

🚫 Don’t Wear Tight or Uncomfortable Clothing

You’ll be moving, playing, and snuggling with your kids — and tight clothes can feel restrictive (and unflattering from some angles). Even professional models don’t look perfect in every pose. Choose something you feel comfortable and confident in.

🚫 Don’t Force Smiles with “Cheese”

Telling your kids to “smile!” or “say cheese!” often leads to stiff, unnatural grins. Instead, engage with them — tickle, hug, play, chase. That’s where the real magic (and real smiles) happen.

🚫 Don’t Stare at the Camera the Whole Time

Some of the most beautiful, heartfelt images happen when you're simply being present with your family. Laugh together, snuggle, explore — trust me, those moments are far more powerful than posed smiles.

🚫 Avoid Bribes Like “Smile or No Treat”

Telling your child they won’t get a reward unless they smile can create stress and resistance. I do encourage bringing small treats like gummy bears — I’m quick to catch those genuine, joy-filled expressions. Fun snacks like popsicles or ice cream also make great props for summery sessions!

🚫 Don’t Book During Nap or Meal Times

Hungry or tired kiddos don’t enjoy photo sessions — and it shows. Try to schedule your session at a time when everyone is well-rested and fed for the best experience.

🚫 Don’t Arrive Late

A rushed session creates stress for everyone. Aim to arrive 10–15 minutes early so you can settle in and start the session relaxed and ready.
